Press Reports 2007 ... 2009

World Monument Fund Watch 2010

Report from WMF web site:

Designed for the first Earl of Milltown by Richard Castle in the 1740s, Russborough stands in stately repose at the base of the Wicklow Mountains, overlooking a large park that falls to the valley of the River Liffey. The well-preserved Palladian mansion and its surrounding demesne were donated to the Irish people in 1978 through the generosity of the estate's second owners, Sir Alfred and Lady Beit.

While the demesne contains one of the most intact and important designed landscapes ever created in Ireland, it has not been accessible to the public in the 30 years that Russborough has been open for visitation. Most of the original outbuildings, the 18th-century water features, and the historic structures in the wider demesne are in urgent need of repair, including the bridge to Lady's Island, the lime kiln, and the ice-house. Loss of historic natural features, including mature broad-leaved woodland and parkland trees, is a very serious problem that must be met by a vast and well-researched replanting program. Renewed attention toward the stewardship of the demesne will restore the integral relationship between the house and its designed and natural landscapes, and preserve the integrity of the whole of Russborough.

RUSSBOROUGH PRESS RELEASE

9th October, 2009

On behalf of the Alfred Beit Foundation ,which owns Russborough , I can confirm that we are very pleased to have been selected for inclusion on the 2010 World Monuments Watch. (The World Monuments website at www.wmf.org provides a definitive list of the 93 selected sites around the world. Indeed Russborough is the only site selected from the Republic of Ireland in this bi-annual selection.) The Watch is intended to call international attention to the challenges facing cultural heritage sites around the world. Inclusion on the list provides an important opportunity for Russborough to promote its site locally and internationally and to work towards its further protection.

The World Monuments Fund is not a grant program in itself but the additional profile that Russborough will receive both nationally & internationally from being on the 2010 'Watch' list might indeed stimulate some grants or donations in due course to assist with the ongoing requirements to restore Russborough House & Demesne to its former glory.

The specific issues mentioned by the World Monuments Fund, in respect of Russborough, are more to do with the landscape , outbuildings, water features and parkland rather than the house itself. The Heritage Council has kindly assisted in past years with substantial grants to restore the full beauty of the main house. This has included roof repairs , window replacement & fire safety etc. Now that the House itself is largely watertight there is a requirement to restore the original landscape and parkland features and it is this area of Russborough House & Demesne that the World Monuments Fund is focussing upon and identifying.
