Michael Calnan & Gunvor Anhoj - Blacksmiths

The Forge (Open most weekdays 10am to 5pm)
Our work involves the forging of bronze and iron. Sections of which are heated via the hearth and worked at 1300 degrees. Inanimate objects are brought to life, as textures are created and movements captured.

In this our 11th year of blacksmithing we feel as if we have just begun; we are embracing new media and are collaborating with other artists. We have recently moved our workshop to Russborough House in County Wicklow, Ireland. From January 2010 we will run a series of taster courses in blacksmithing.

We ventured into the world of the blacksmith coming from two different backgrounds. Michael having spent time involved in the art world through his free-lance work for world renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. The work he creates emanates a degree of simplicity and elegance irrespective of mass and size of material.Gunvor came from a horticultural background, where she spent years surrounded by the amazing diversity of nature. She was always driven by the need "to create". The experimental side of the craft plays a big part; the discovery of new techniques and textures often becomes the starting point of her expressive pieces.. www.calnan.anhoj.dk

New Joint Studio/Workshop opens at Russborough House - May 2010

Eamonn Heffernan and Herve de Wergifosse two very diverse artists have joined forces to offer you a new experience in the art of wood turning and sculpting.

The studio/workshop is opening on the May Bank holiday weekend (1st - 3rdMay), in the new Arts & Crafts Centre in Russborough House. This historic house situated on the N81, (approximately 5 km from Blessington).

Eamonn lives in the Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow and makes unique Irish wood/bog oak sculptures with the Ancient Heart of Ireland as a theme. His inspiration comes from the Celtic history of Ireland which has grown over thousands of years.

Hervé lives in Brittas, Co. Dublin. He believes that more than any material, timber has a soul. Each fibre contains a personal history. From log to art piece, the Turner's chisel reveals the natural beauty of the wood, giving new life to century old Irish trees. It is a privilege to create unique pieces of work to be enjoyed for many more years.

Opening times are 10am until 5pm Friday Saturday and Sunday.(May to September)

Other times by appointment.
