Designed by the renowned architect Richard Castle, the entrance is a masterpiece of formality and elegance. Constructed from rusticated granite ashlar, its centerpiece is a triumphal arch crowned with bestial finials—a nod to the Leeson family crest. Flanking this grand arch are pedestrian gates, beautifully accented with bold V-channelled rustication and intricate keystones, showcasing the craftsmanship of the period.
The roof, once gleaming with heather-blue slate, and the lions, once white, had in recent decades been overwhelmed by moss and other vegetation. Although somewhat romantic in its weathered appearance - a testament to its age and the passage of time.
However, time has taken its toll. Cracks in the render and missing mortar on the granite features have allowed moisture to seep in, causing some deterioration. Working with conservation architects and practitioners, in this campaign of restoration we have removed all of the vegetation, dirt, and other biological growth from the lion finials, rooves and pediments. Failed lime renders and inappropriate cements have been raked out, and are being replaced with an appropriate lime mortar mix.

Over the next two years we hope to secure funding to complete the restoration of the entrance gate, there is much work to be carried out to the walls, as well as a decorative wrought iron overthrow that awaits restoration.
Despite these challenges, the entrance to Russborough remains a remarkable example of Georgian architecture. Its formality and grace are central to the character of the estate, and efforts are underway to preserve these features for future generations.
