Join experienced course instructor Chris Hayes for a practical workshop where he will guide you through the essential skills of scything.

Chris will teach about the history of the scythe from an Irish perspective and the effect of the industrial revolution on the production of scythes. Over the course of the day Chris will demonstrate the correct techniques for safe, efficient, and satisfying mowing, from body positioning and swinging the blade through to sharpening and caring for your scythe.

Working with a scythe is a wonderfully grounding way to reconnect with nature, slow down and observe the rhythms of the natural world. As you move through the grass with this traditional hand tool, you begin to notice the subtle processes at play in the landscape and gain a deeper appreciation of hoe we can work in harmony with these natural cycles rather than against them.

Whilst the fundamentals can be learned in a single day, scything is a timeless skill that can be refined and enjoyed for a lifetime.

This course will teach you about progressive grass management, and how to properly cut and dry the material at hand, from grass to cereals and other fibrous plants.

Whether you are interested in traditional land management, biodiversity-friendly gardening, or simply learning a rewarding new skill in the outdoors, this workshop offers a unique and enriching experience for beginners and enthusiasts alike.

Scythes are available to purchase on the day, or you can order a scythe in advance at www.scythe.ie. There will be sufficient scythes on the day for everyone to be able to practise.
